Renovation Budget Guide

Does your home require work to improve its functionality or revamp areas that you feel are outdated or no longer reflect your taste, as a homeowner? If you are looking to carry out home renovations, the following guide will help you navigate the process!

Create a Plan

Depending on your home’s age and the weather conditions it’s exposed to year-round, there may be numerous renovation on your list; however, prioritization is crucial. You’ll want to fix the parts of your home that are driving you crazy, but it’s best to take a more logical approach and make decisions that maximize functionality and where you’ll get the most value for your money.

To understand whether your dream plan is realistic, get estimates from three different contractors. Upon receiving the quotes, find the average to get a rough sense of the work. It’s advised to take 20% of your quote and add it to the total cost, to leave a buffer for unforeseen costs.

Get Real Bids

Now that you have an idea of the costs associated with your dream plan, if it doesn’t fit your budget, re-evaluate what is necessary for your plans and set a real budget for the necessary work.

So, you have filtered down your plans to include the most important renovations for your home and set a realistic budget for that work. You’re now ready to receive real bids for your project. Make sure the bids are in depth, breaking down all the costs and explaining why certain products are being used. Once you’ve decided on a bid, make sure you set your price in stone with the contractor.

Refine Vision to Match Budget

At this point, you should have a sense of which contractor you want to choose. Work with them to further refine your plans until your plan and budget are in sync with the estimate given to you.
