The Best Summer Roof Maintenance Tips

Summer is just around the corner, which means it is time to spruce up your roof. After the rainy and chilly season of winter and spring, now is one of the best times to check your roof for damages and do some necessary seasonal maintenance. Here are the best summer roof maintenance tips that you can follow to keep your roof looking and performing the way you need it to.

Inspect Your Roof

For health and safety reasons, it is highly recommended to have a professional roofing company come inspect your roof. If you want to inspect your roof yourself, do this safely, be sure you are wearing grippy shoes and be sure to wear protective clothing and accessories (goggles, gloves, a hat, etc.). Also ensure that someone is with you to hold your ladder so that you don’t fall!

Be sure to look for things like:

  • Debris that has collected under your eaves
  • Leaking flashing near chimney, vents, satellite dishes and skylights
  • Missing or damaged shingles
  • Fungus or mold growth

Gutters

Your gutters are an important part of your roof to inspect. Be sure to clean them very well along with roof drains and downspouts. All the debris that may have collected throughout the seasons (such as leaves, dirt, plastic items, etc.) is a home for rodents and insects. The best way to check if you got everything out of your gutters is to simply run some water through them with your hose!

Seal Nesting Hot Spots

During your inspection, be sure to look out for open areas in your eaves. These open areas often house rodents, which can cause plenty of issues for your roof such as damaged shingles, damage to electrical insulation (which can start fires), etc. Call your local roofing company to repair these spots immediately.

Check For Mold

Checking for mold should always be one of your biggest concerns as a homeowner. Be sure to check your ceiling and roof for mold during your roof inspection. This means looking out for signs such as:

  • Discolouration on ceiling (black or white spots)
  • Fuzzy white/green spots around shingles
  • Holes in your ceiling or roof

If you find any of these signs, call your local roofing company to get your roof repaired as soon as possible. Leaving mold in your home can cause health damages as well as increasingly more costly repairs for your roof in the future.

As you can see, it is extremely important to maintain your roof. It is the key to having a healthy, functional roof as well as a safe and fun summer season spent without worry.
