Three Most Common Roofing Issues in Winter

In Ontario Canada, winter is a force to be reckoned with. Freezing temperatures, strong winds and snow, are a lot for homes to go up against and this includes the roof. The following are some of the main ways our roof can be damaged this winter season.

Attic Condensation

Condensation occurs when a cold surface starts interacting with warm air. This can be seen in improperly insulated or ventilated attics, when too much cold air is able to get into the attic space. This condensation can cause moisture buildup, which can lead to the development of mold and potentially leaks inside your attic.

Ice Accumulation

Remember, your gutter system is an extension of your roof and can be at risk of damage if ice forms inside of it, throughout the winter.

Gutters that aren’t completely clean, heading into the winter, can collect moisture. When temperatures drop below freezing, any moisture in the gutters will turn to ice and really weigh down your gutters. This additional weight can lead to your gutters pulling away from the home, causing extensive damage.

Strong Winds

Have you ever tried to enjoy the outdoors during winter, only to encounter strong winds that made being outside unbearable? Unfortunately, strong winds can be just as unpleasant for your roof as they are for you.

Winds can tear shingles from their proper position or cause them to get pulled up. When this happens, not only does rain gain access to the actual roof, but it’s also easier for warm air to escape from your home–greatly reducing the temperature in your home.

To avoid the damages that these winter dangers can cause, it’s best to have your roof assessed prior to the winter season and also do a quick inspection of your roof after any severe winter weather.

At Turnbull Roofing, our team of roofing professionals is capable of properly assessing and repairing any damage that is caused throughout the winter!
