Ways that Animals may be Damaging your Roof

Animals may be damaging your roof without you even knowing it. Pesky creatures will often look to our roofs for protection and shelter, which can unfortunately cause expensive and dangerous damage along the way. Here are some ways that animals can prove hazardous to the integrity of your roof, and measures to ensure you avoid the damage.

Bird Droppings on the Roof

From pigeons to crows, birds will often sit on your roof or even decide to make it their home. Unfortunately, once this is the case, the bird droppings on your roof will start to pile up. With a bird’s diet consisting of highly acidic food, their droppings will also be very acidic. Over time, this can cause damage to your roof as the acidity eats away at the shingles.

Bees Making their Hives

When bees see even the smallest hole in your roof, they can see it as an invitation to create their hives. These insects stop at nothing to create their hives for a colony, and will chew through your roof to make the room for it. This can even result in the bees hallowing out parts of your roof, causing serious structural damage.

Raccoons and Squirrels Looking to Enter the Attic

These creatures often seek shelter by trying to enter the attic, by whatever means necessary. They can gnaw away or rip at shingles to create holes as an entry point. Even the smallest holes can provide these animals with access to the attic, and they’ll continue to create a bigger hole over time and add to the damage. This can cause severe damage to not only your roof, but also your attic if the creatures are able to get in.

Avoiding the Pests

With all of these cases, regular roof inspections can help to identify the problem and get it fixed before the animals can do any harm. Look for excess bird droppings, small holes or damaged areas in the roof that could be susceptible to these creatures. If you spot any of these warning signs, Turnbull Roofing & Renovations Ltd. is happy to make the repairs to prevent any serious damage and keep your roof safe from pests!
