What Causes Roof Leaks?

If you are a homeowner, you already know how important it is to pay attention to your roof and ensure that it is properly cared for. If a roof is not properly cared for and maintained, many issues may arise that can lead to leaking. If your roof has recently sprung a leak or you are looking to protect your home from potential leaks, take a look at the four most common causes of roof leaks listed below:

Weather Exposure

Although some roofing materials are extremely durable and resistant to harsh weather, no roof is ever completely impervious to the effects of weather. Weather like the sun, rain, sleet, ice, wind, and snow will eventually wear down your roof. Your roof is even more impervious and more likely to receive damage if you live in more extreme climates (heavy snowfall during winter, hurricane areas, etc.). Weather will inevitably be responsible for degradation of roofing materials and you will begin to find the issues that can cause leaking; died shingles and roofing paper that is no longer effective due to sun exposure, shingles that have been stripped leaving roof exposed, and added moisture from rain, ice, and snow.

Blocked Gutters

This is a common issue that leads to roof leaks. Blocked gutters force water to relocate and cause leaks rather than properly drain from your roof. Thankfully, this issue can be easily solved and prevented through the regular maintenance and removal of leaves, debris, and collected materials in your gutters. Do this especially during rainy or snowy seasons as blocked gutters can cause ice dams to form.

Poor Construction

When it comes to major home constructions or reconstructions, it is important to hire experienced and qualified professionals. If you do not work with someone who is qualified and trusted for their trade, you may receive bad service and roofing construction. This is the leading cause of leaky roofs and should always be considered when homeowners go about a roofing endeavor. Do your research and choose a roofer who will take care of you and your home properly, not just the lowest price option.

Leaky Fixtures

Skylights, air conditioners, chimneys, and other fixtures being incorrectly installed or not the proper size for your home is another cause of leaky roofs. In these cases, be sure that you work with someone who is experienced and qualified to install your fixture to minimalize chances of leaking. Be sure to get the best information possible about whether or not it is advisable to install a fixture as it often diminishes the quality of your roof, making it more likely to leak.
